The alarm pulled Gary into the world of Tuesday. 6am and he knew there was a long day ahead.<\/p>\n
\u2018A good breakfast, that\u2019s the secret, that\u2019ll keep me going all day long.\u2019<\/p>\n
He scrambled the eggs, then sat and gazed out on the Chicago skyline as he planned his route. He knew where he would be tomorrow at this time. He\u2019d be right back in Chicago but there was a lot of walking to be done before then.<\/p>\n
\u2018Right, coat on. Time to go.\u2019<\/p>\n
He rang Julie downstairs. \u201cAre you leaving now?\u201d<\/p>\n
Julie was ready, setting out for work for the day. Her office was on his route, a short walk from their apartment block, so he went along with her, right there beside her on the sidewalk.<\/p>\n
\u201cCan we go out tomorrow night?\u201d he said, just like that, brave as you like.<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought you were going away on a long hike? Will you be back by then?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, I\u2019ll be back. I\u2019ll be tired, but I\u2019ll be back, probably falling down at your door.\u201d<\/p>\n
He smiled, she smiled.<\/p>\n
\u201cOk,\u201d she said. \u201cWe could go out for a beer together if you like.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s perfect. If I get drunk, I\u2019ll be right next to you. See you later.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHave a good day, where are you off to?\u201d She said.<\/p>\n
\u201cKansas City, and I\u2019ll be back by tomorrow morning.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWalking? Surely not.\u201d He saw her frown. \u201cThat\u2019s got to be a good 500 miles?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, it is. 500 there and 500 back. I\u2019d walk that far. I\u2019ll be lonely without you, but I\u2019ll dream of you and that\u2019ll keep me going.\u201d<\/p>\n
